In the latest chapter of the multi-day story called “Let’s try to get hold of the medication I need,” I noticed this bicycle parked outside, still carrying a vintage Swiss bicycle registration plate.
This little red plaque is 50 years old and comes from a system that was part of owning a bicycle in Switzerland for almost a century. It showed that the bike carried liability insurance, and could be traced in cases of theft. It had to be collected from the police every January. In 1989, the metal plate gave way to a yearly sticker, before the entire requirement was repealed in 2012, when liability insurance was considered commonplace. A small piece of history, still attached to someone’s bike.
